C;aptain; Lewis Childs had little chance to make an impact on the story because he was dead in his first scene.
Jack Nicholson, who was originally cast in the role, was thought to be too animated as the dead man. Subtlety was the key to pulling off "stabbed, drowned captain in bathtub".
Sean Penn was also considered but the role eventually went to Sir Ian McKellan.
